Arizona

Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that Arizona requires Massage Therapists to complete a minimum of 24** hours of continuing education every 2 years for license renewal.

At least 12 hours must be completed in a workshop, seminar, lecture, conference, class or instruction related to massage. A maximum of 12 hours of distance/correspondence learning may be completed.

**Effective September 13, 2013 required Continuing Education is 24 hours.

California

Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state, and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that there are two levels of Massage Therapy Certification in California.

A Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) must have at least 500 hours of formal education and training in massage therapy.

A Certified Massage Practitioner (CMP) has completed between 250 to 499 hours of massage therapy training.

There are currently no continuing education requirements for renewal of the CMT or CMP certification.

Even though CEU’s are not required many massage therapists still take continuing education courses that capture their interest and expands their knowledge and indeed set an individual apart in their level of skill and knowledge.

Colorado

Continuing Education Requirements.

It's our current understanding that, in Colorado, the Colorado Board of Massage does not require continuing education for Massage Therapists license renewal, however, licenses need to be renewed by January 31st of each odd year.

Connecticut

Continuing Education Requirements

It is our understanding that Connecticut requires massage therapists to complete 24 CE hours every 4 years for license renewal. No more than 6 hours of continuing education can be achieved in via Internet-based or distance learning programs. No more than 12 hours can be obtained from programs not approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Delaware

Continuing Education Requirements.

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that for license renewal Delaware requires Licensed Massage Therapists (LMT) are required to have 24 hours of approved continuing education (CE) every 2 years for license renewal unless renewal falls within the first year after licensure (Section 9.2 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations). Of the 24 hours, 18 are required to be core courses (the other 6 can be either core or an elective). You can take up to half (12) of your required hours online, but you must still complete a maximum of 6 hours in electives. For required CE starting 9/1/2014, see Section 9.4 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations.

Certified Massage Technicians (CMT) are required to complete 12 hours of approved continuing education (CE) every 2 years for license renewal unless renewal falls within the first year after certification. Of the 12 hours, 9 are required to be core courses (the other 3 can be either core or an elective). You can take up to half (6) of your required hours online, but you must still complete a maximum of 3 hours in electives. District of Columbia

Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that for license renewal, District of Columbia requires Massage Therapists to complete 12 CE hours, of which three (3) hours must be in Ethics and Nine (9) hours must be in massage-related course through a Board-approved provider. Of these nine (9) hours, six (6) hours must be face to face instruction and three (3) hours may be online instruction. Licensees are to renew their licenses by January 31st of odd years. There is no Continuing Education Requirement for 1st time renewal applicants.

Florida

Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that for license renewal, Florida requires massage therapists to complete 24 CE hours by August 31st of each odd-numbered year.

First Biennial Renewal Only:

Required Subject: 2 Hours Prevention of Medical Errors

General Hours: 1 hour of CE for each month or partial month that has elapsed since the issuance of the license. Although there are no specific CE subject area requirements for first time renewals, ALL remaining courses must be taken with approved providers to be accepted. (The one hour per month is not literal. You are required to have a total of 1 hour per month. For example, if licensed for 12 months, you will need 12 total hours, which must include two hours in the prevention of medical errors).

Following First Renewal:

Required Subject: At least 12 hours must be taken live and relevant to and focus on massage therapy techniques which may include the history of massage, human anatomy & physiology, kinesiology and/or pathology. These hours must be completed via live classroom instruction (including hands-on instruction or demonstration).

Required Subject: 2 Hours Medical Error

Required Subject: 2 Hours Laws and Rules (Laws and Rules governing the Massage Therapy Act)

Required Subject: 2 Hours Professional Ethics

6 General Hours: The remaining 6 general hours may include, but are not limited to, courses in communication with clients and other professionals; insurance relating to third party payment or reimbursement for services; psychological dynamics of the client-therapist relations; risk management, including charting, documentation, record keeping or infection control or massage practice management.

**As of Oct. 16th 2020; 1 CE credit is required in Human Trafficking to be completed by January 1st 2021.

Continuing Education Requirements by NCBTMB

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) is the national governing body responsible for credentialing Massage Therapists. Massage Therapists must renew their board certification every 2 years. During that 2-year period, Massage Therapists are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education. Three (3) of the 24 hours must be in research. Three (3) of the 24 hours must be in ethics. There is a limit of 4 hours allow in self-care coursework. The NCBTMB accepts 24 hours of OnlineCE.com courses.

Indiana

Iowa

Continuing Education Requirements.

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that Iowa requires massage therapists to complete 24 CE hours every 2 years for license renewal.

A minimum of 12 hours of the 24 hours shall be: Direct, hands-on training attended personally by the licensee related to the actual practice of massage/bodywork therapy.

A maximum of 12 hours of the 24 hours may be in either of the following: Content areas that are programs of learning which contribute directly to professional competency and enhance the practice of the licensee.

A maximum of 6 hours may be obtained in independent study courses in the areas of massage/bodywork techniques, ethics, mandatory reporter training, and practice management.

A licensee shall obtain two hours of credit in CPR for every two-year renewal period.

Virginia

Continuing Education Requirements.

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our understanding that Virginia requires massage therapists to complete 24 CE hours every 2 years for license renewal.

In order to renew a certificate biennially, a certified Massage Therapist shall:

1. Hold current certification by the NCBTMB; or

2. Complete at least 24 hours of continuing education or learning activities with at least one hour in professional ethics. Hours chosen shall be those that enhance and expand the skills and knowledge related to the clinical practice of massage therapy and may be distributed as follows:

A minimum of 12 of the 24 hours shall be in activities or courses provided by an NCBTMB-approved provider and may include seminars, workshops, home study courses, and continuing education courses.

No more than 12 of the 24 hours may be activities or courses that may include consultation, independent reading or research, preparation for a presentation, a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other such experiences that promote continued learning.

Continuing Education Requirements.
